QUESTION:
Where do the Amish get their name?

ANSWER:
The Amish are named after Swiss born Jacob (Jakob) Amman a prominent Mennonite Bishop.
Born in 1644, Amman eventually moved to France in 1673.  While in France Amman grew
increasingly disenchanted with the attitudes of other Mennonite leaders regarding the discipline
of members.  Among areas of contention, Amman was a firm believer in Streng Meidung or
"shunning", a practice not strictly enforced among his Mennonite peers.  Between 1693-1711
Amman helped to successfully orchestrate a break between the Swiss Mennonites (who were
named after Menno Simons) and his own followers who became known as the Amish Mennonites
(later just Amish).

QUESTION:
Is it true that Lancaster City once served as the Capital of the United States?

ANSWER:
Yes, although it was only for one day.  During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress
were all targets of the British & carried heavy prices on their heads.  The Congressmen escaped
to Lancaster City & re-convened September 27, 1777, making Lancaster the United States Capital.
Ironically, it was not only the Continental Congress who had fled Philadelphia & the forefathers
could find no lodgings in our town.  They were forced to continue their journey moving next to
York ending Lancaster's one day designation as Capital of the United States.
QUESTION:
How many people live in Lancaster County and how many of those are Amish?

ANSWER:
In 2006 Lancaster County PA's population was recorded as 494,486.  Although exact numbers of
Amish are not known, it has been estimated that the Amish make up between 25-30% of the
population.  It has also been estimated that 80% of all Amish in the United States reside in
Pennsylvania.
